I have been embroidering since I was a child. I started using it in my work when I was in graduate school and needed to make large pieces in a very small space.

The anatomical embroideries were begun in 2009 during my Father’s struggle with Leukemia. Among the many tests he had, were a series of CATSCANS of his brain that were  amazing images; full of color and shapes. I started adapting illustrations from medical text books and embroidered a series of brains using color and stitch styles to interpret the anatomy.

Over time I have expanded my anatomical studies to bones, and cells. My current project is an astrocyte brain cell.

Embroidery is drawing with thread, the quality of line and the textures in thread strands translate detailed imagery from photos, illustrations and scans. The embroidery returns the dimensionality of the body’s contours.
