FOXP1 is one of a group of genes associated with vocalization, in vertebrates.

FOXP1 is specifically related to the ability to learn and remember song in zebra finches and language in humans.

The gene is represented in color gradients with the zebra finch sequence on the top half and the human sequence on the bottom.

The color gradient shows the pattern of the proteins in the gene-A,C,G,T and the remarkable similarity between the two sequences. By using transparent dyes suspended in water the piece covers a much larger range of variation as light passes through the bags. The dyes are food safe, non toxic pigments that can be poured into the water table or Bay without causing harm to plants or animals.

Most vertebrates use vocalization to communicate with other members of their own species. Are vocalizations language? How can we expand our definitions of language and make connections with the natural world through vocal expression? In this example of FOXP1 consider the miracle of vocal interaction between humans and zebra finches.
